I’m a big map geek. I love taking those “where should you live?” Buzzfeed quizzes and playing TapQuiz on my phone while I’m waiting in line at the grocery store. So when I saw this map come across my Facebook news feed, I immediately got excited and checked out how my county and state measured up.
As you know, I live in Kansas which clearly is primarily cattle and not people. There are a few counties that have far more people than cattle (Johnson, Wyandotte, Shawnee etc.) but Anderson county, my good ole home sweet home, is comprised of 80-90% cattle. Isn’t that amazing?! Check out western Kansas, where most counties are 90% cattle and only 10% (or less) people.
So, to celebrate this map-tastic fact, here are
10 things about life where cattle outnumber people:
- The smell of cow poop is always in the air.
- We have the best sunsets.
- Instead of limos, high schoolers take “the good truck” to prom.
- You can see the stars so much more clearly here.
- A trip to the grocery store isn’t just a few blocks, it’s a “trip to town” and is planned in advance.
- Rodeos are a commonplace event – almost every county has one during the yearly fair.
- You’re more likely to see cowboy boots as everyday apparel and not just during “barn parties.”
- The compliment “You’ve got a nice set of calves” doesn’t have the same meaning out here but is still just as coveted.
- Business lunches take place at the sale barn cafe instead of the local bistro.
- Instead of Bonnaroo or Coachella, vacations are centered around Cornstock and Country Stampede.
I love my home – what do you love about where you live? What makes it unique?
Until next time,
~ Buzzard ~
